I was just thinking to faithfully take your dog or cat every 6 months to a year to the vet for all the
vaccines, stool tests, etc... & now a days it us like $50 just to walk through the door..

well they are
getting better care & have more money spent on them... then my family...
This isn't right

Does anyone else faithfully bring their pet & put out all this money??
I am really thinking of just doing rabies clinics & buy heartworm, etc... maybe it's
me but all the require is alittle to much & is crazy what is charged!!

I worked at a vet for 6 years.... and he charged the hell outta people... I tend now to be very irregular with the vet visits for my animals

although I do tend to know what is 'normal' and what isnt.... I also feel that vet check ups tend to be a little overdone by some ppl....

as long as vaccinations remain up to date...... a few less visits generally wouldnt kill

What's a rabies clinic? I have 3 LARGE outside dogs that are due for rabies and to be tested for heartworms. Why do they want you to test for heartworms even if you've had them on preventative? Anyway, those are the two things I need done, but if I take them to the vet he'll want to do SOOOOOO many other things. Last Feb I took all 3 at once to the vet and the bill was $980.00. They did fecal testing for worms, kennel cough, (I don't board them) and a whole lot of stuff that wasn't needed. Why don't they just do a preventative worming? Sorry to rant but you've toughed on a subject I've been thinking a lot about now that
i'm past their one year check up. I wish you could just tell the vet do only the things I want. If I could find a rabies clininc I would take them there in a heart beat.

I took my dog to the vet when he got bit by a dog,and when the door took off the tip of his tail.Otherwise I provide all medical care.Rabies are done at the county or used to be done cheap at pet stores. I know they have pet insurance, but I bet it pays about as well as the insurance we have for the family-which is about nothing.

My MIL had to take her cat to the vet last week, he had been gone for 2 months and came home extremely sick. The vet tested for feline aids/leukemia, checked him out and then after finding out he had feline aids, they decided to have him put to sleep. The next day, they brought their other indoor cat in to have her checked out, same tests done, rabies and flea shot for her and they made them buy a carrier to take her home in, because the vet said they couldn't touch the cat for 1/2 hour due to the flea shot. Total charges for the 2 office visits, a couple quick tests, 2 shots, carrier and putting the first cat to sleep....$497!!! And she has to bring the indoor cat back next week to have a couple teeth pulled and the rest cleaned...probably be another $200 or more.

I have 7 cats....the last 3 aren't fixed yet though. The last one I had done about 2 yrs ago cost me $140 after all was said and done. Unless you are rich, there is no way animal lovers can afford the prices these days.

Both of my dogs are females, but they still need fixed too. Luckily there have been no injuries or illnesses!

I found out TSC sells a lot of meds and that I can administer them myself. Rabies clinics are the best way to go, 1800petmeds is a big help and I have been trying to find one of those spay/neuter days where they do them for a lot cheaper.

I have to agree with you .. I simply cant afford to take them to the vet regularly, I do my own vaccines and when I have to take them I i drive 45 minutes to go to a really old really cheap vet... He is a very nice guy and fols come from 3 states to see him .. You just have to sit there for 3 -5 hours waiting to get in ..

i only take them once a year for their rabies and distemper or whatever it's called. i don't do lymes and i dont' do heartworm. i figure it they get sick.. i can't afford to shell out tons of money for them. honestly. my cat hasn't gotten his rabies for over a year. but he doens't need to be registered. yay. the dogs do. but my vet doesn't charge as much as others.

Since we have cats I do thier shots myself. If there's a sudden change or illness they go, but they're fixed indoor cats, so not much changes. Wehn one got out and was hit by a car we took him in, and got his treated (morphene and kitty bed rest for 3 months), 4 years later the same cat came down with facial swelling, he had a brain tumor, Since the treatments are as bad as the disease, we brought him home to live out his last days here.

when i got my cat fixed(not declawed though) it only cost me 45 dollars. other places wanted over 80 bucks(and even 100 at one place) and i thought there was no way that id ever go to any other place. i even got my sis in law to drive 45 mins to get to this vet.

This is a hard thing to decide you want the best for them & yourself but it is just to much....
I have thought about administering the important preventatives & may still do it... Of course I haven't
seen the rabies vaccine for sale in the catalog...
