Is it just me or do you??

Rabies is one you have to get from the vet.. I usually just watch out for the Rabies clinics where you just pop in and $20. later your out the door...

I have four large dogs...all born here and raised here...I have had them on heartworm preventative monthly since they were 16 weeks old...don't need an annual test for that...I vaccinate once a year for the regular stuff myself and take them to the rabies clinic at 6 $ a pop for each dog...if there are no injuries or illnesses, they don't need to go to the vet for routine stuff and exorbatant charges...the male is neutered so I don't worry about the girls...since my neighbors moved who had the horrible pits and a male Doberman, I don't have stray dog problems...but I still supervise the girls potty calls when they are cycling just in case...the neuter on the boy was 90 $ but I have heard charges as high as 250 $ for that procedure...I know vet clinics are a business and need to make a profit to stay in business but some charges seem very excessive to me at times...

edited to add: I do nail trims and teeth cleaning myself also...if you start doing these things when they are pups, there are no wrestling matches over these issues when they are older...on grooming day mine line up and jump onto the grooming table for their procedures...it is a riot as they jockey for position to see who gets to be first...

We just get the rabies at the rabies clinic and give them their meds ourselves. Our vet is really good and doesn't price gouge, but it still costs more than we want to pay. It is so much easier to do it ourselves and she is just as healthy. I have never had my cats checked for anything. They all get Frontline for fleas/ticks and all seem to be happy and healthy. If they sick, I'll just put them out of their misery.

My dogs go to a rabies clinic.. $10 each for the shot...thats it. AND..i dont have to go back for 3 years now! Because they were give a 3 yr shot last month....

I only bring them in if they are sick or to be fixed... Its just too crazy expensive.

I take mine in for vaccinations when needed and I don't hesitate to go in if there is a problem, but I don't do any other regular check-ups. My vet is great though. We once had to go in for an emergency visit as one of the dogs was having an allergic reaction to some kind of insect sting and his face was very swollen. They charged us just for the medication that they administered, no fee for the visit itself! I thought that was amazing and got them my loyalty right then and there. They have shown on more than one occasion that they are not the kind of vet that charges for something just because they can.

I have the vet do their 3 year rabies, just so she can put her eye on them and see if anything else needs be done. It costs about $50 just for the visit and rabies shot, but its worth it to me.

Just had Sweetie spayed, that was $250. Worth every penny; I was a nervous wreck having her put under. They emailed me pics of her immediately out of surgery, an hour later, and an hour later.

I then took Mikey this past week to have some teeth removed; he had 4 rotten teeth in front, and wasnt happy, plus his breath stunk. I felt more comfortable since the spay went so well. An hour after I dropped him off, they called; they had to take out 22 teeth, all rotten! Even gave me a little bag with all his rotten teeth, told me to make earrings out of them. uh huh..... The estimate on that visit was $260, and even with pulling all the extra teeth, it was still only $260.

I love my vet. She's worth every penny.

What Redhen said. My cats see the vet every 3 years for vaccines, or for emergencies.

I don't have dogs, but vets here (Seattle) only recommend heartworm meds for dogs visiting the south. Maybe something has changed?

& Halo,
Several years ago I had the same thing happen to a cat (Rescue). All the teeth were rotten, She didn't charge me. Said it wasn't work to reach in and pull all the teeth with her fingers. Done in about 3 minutes. I loved that vet.

Imp- I do have to cop to taking the neighbors 18 yo cat to the vet last fall without telling them. She was scratching her face off. Several trips to the vet spent $1000s and the issue is not resolved. No more trips to the vet for that cat.
