Is it just me or does anyone else think this...

The restraining cones from McMurray's catalogue seem to me to be nothing more than roof flashing pop riveted together into a cone. If this is the case I should be able to make a few for my own use easily from left over roofing material. I'm planning on getting a good size order of some straight run briolers.

Any cone shaped device will work... I hear some even use those orange traffic cones!

My kill cones are plastic bathroom trash cans. I got them at Walmart for about 97 cents. I cut a hole in the bottom and 3 little holes in the top for the ropes to hang the bucket. Lots of resourceful alternatives to expensive "kill cones".

I agree - looked at them too but couldn't justify spending the money. I've also heard of using gallon milk jugs. My birds have two weeks to go and we are going to try using a big fishing net. Think this will work?

I used a gallon milk jug last fall after cutting the hole a little larger. I'm pl,anning on using modified gallon jugs (windshield washer fluid) this summer.

With a fishing net there might be quite a bit of flapping around and it might not be the best thing for people who don't want to see something headless moving. I think that the milk carton idea is a great one. It's cheap and contains the bird so it doesn't freak out the person who has to kill the chicken and it's easy to clean.

Maybe we'll try the jugs instead. Not worried about anyone freaking out (dad is doing the deed) but it would probably be cleaner

I have meat birds and am learning...can someone explain this jug/cone process to me?

Well, I'm pretty new at this too - will be the first time. From what I've read, you use the cone or cut the bottom off a milk jug and tack it up to something sturdy. Put the chicken in head first, pull the head through the small hole and slit the throat. Use a bucket/garbage can underneath to catch the blood. This way it won't flop around and get loose. That's the way I picture it anyway. Will let you know in a couple weeks how it works!
