...like there are a lot more roos popping up in orders of pullets? I have at least 2 possibly 3 in two separate orders of pullets - one order was for 3 SS pullets - and one of those is a roo. I picked out 3 EEs and 1 of those turned out to be a roo. !!!! What is going on here?! Or is it just me and my dumb bad luck? Anyone else seem to notice this trend?

I'm a first time chicken Mom, so no previous experience but can tell you that the Feed Store I got my ten 'pullets' from 13 wks ago has discovered that most of the 25 pullet EE's they ordered from Privett are roos including my two. Darn, that means no pretty blue green eggs.

That leaves me with 8 pullets and 2 roos. I live on 4 acres, so I can have 2 roos but concerned they are going to fight over the hens. So far they aren't. Only the friendly roo that's been crowing for about a month acts like a roo. No crow from the other one that is my henny penny sky is falling chick.

Feed Store tells me they have a farmer who will take the EE roos if people don't want to keep then.

As long as everyone gets along, I'll keep them.

Where did you get your chicks from? I have gotten all of mine from Ideal. Out of 21 chicks, one that was supposed to be a pullet turned out to be a Roo. They give a 90% guarantee.

This is not the first post I've read here in which people say that the number of roos they got is a lot higher than the expected 10% or so. Makes one wonder, esp. since there was such a shortage of chicks this year. Interestingly, I have not noticed anyone suspecting this of Ideal.

I picked up 10 BO's from feed store and they were all hens, YIPPEE!! Just lucky? I think so. Any time you are dealing with day old chicks, it's always a gamble. I think the best bet is to always order extra in case you lose some and/or end up with some roos and just be prepared to deal with them. Rehome/ butcher. I personally don't mind some young fried roosters. Good Luck Woody

I bought 12 pullets from TSC, they are all pullets, 4 of them are definately not EE's, but, they are pullets.

I bought 4 EE pullets from a Mom & Pop feed store in town, they are all pullet and have even grown up to look like EE's.

I bought 2 Silver Laced Wyandotte pullets last week from the Mom & Pop store, so I can't tell about them yet . . .

So far so good I guess . . .

I would suspect that if you bought yours at a feed store and the public has handled them, the peeps got mixed up with help from unsupervised kids.
