i worked at mcmurray hatchery for three years and they do a good job with there orders. i know because i was one of the people who did these orders and packed away all these chicks. if there were only 26 chicks in the box like there should have been then the chicks should have been fine. but yes there are times that they do just die. i took some home and they all died by the end of the week. somethin could have happened to them like it may have gotten to cold or to hot it just depends. there is many reasons why they could have died. also the one that you got with a crooked neck that pointed straight up we called those star gazers and you should not have recieved one. those types of chickens we discard and should NOT be given to a customer. a long with the four legged, ones with twisted beaks, broken legs, or deformed in any way. but sometimes you get someone lazy or a new person and they just leave them because they dont care about the customers or there job. the hatchery has many teenagers working there like i was but i was one of the best workers there and working 12 or 14 and even a 17 hour shift every friday to pack away these chickens. i am not sure if they will send you more chickens for yours dying or not because they are very busy and have thousands of orders that are shipped all over the U.S. but if it happens again you may want to contact them. if you call ask for Bud Wood he is the head of the operation there and would be able to help you the most.
