We are building the coop now & have framed for 2 windows for ventilation. THEN I thought of the roosting poles---ugh.
Is it ok to put the roosting pole in front of the window?? They will have a nice view???
Or will they not like that? Too drafty? Too much light?? I dont know what to do

PLEASE tell me if you think this is ok, I know it may seem like a silly question but I need advice from those of you who know...
Blessings,
Laura

My new coop is getting a roost in front of the window today.

I have my roosts in front of the window. During the summer last year I would have 2 or three that would return to the coop 15 minutes or so earlier than the other girls...I swear is was to claim the coveted window seat!! The only issue might be if that window is needed for ventilation during the window. A small crack above or below the roost might be ok, but you don't want the cross breeze to hit the chickens while they are trying to sleep on the roost. You should plan now for ventilation for winter;)

Here's the spot my girls all love!

Mine love theirs in front of the window - be warned, when they see you coming, they go NUTS!!
In the winter they move away if it's too cold, and it's never too sunny for a chicken!!!!!!!!

I am adding a 36"x24" vintage 8 pane window to my coop for my girls. It will not open, but from what I've read and seen in pics, hens love to sit and look out at what's going on- So I'm putting a roost in front of it for them. It will also allow for lots of extra light and I can see in from the house. The only down fall is that to avoid light flow into the nest boxes, the window has to go above, on the same wall as the boxes... so I'll have to add a poop board.

For the warm part of the year, sure that is fine! Make sure there is hardwarecloth over the window opening so raccoons etc can't get their grabby hands in.

For the colder part of the year, though, you will not be able to have those windows open. But you really ought to have some more winter-friendly kind of ventilation openings *anyhow*, so as long as you've built those TOO, and THEY aren't right over the roost, that'll be fine.

(Ideally for winter you want a long opening at the top of at least the usually-downwind wall(s), with a flap or whatever to allow you to adjust how far open it on a given day. You DO need ventilation open ALL WINTER, though, yes even in upstate NY, or you will get humidity and frostbite problems)

Good luck, have fun,

Pat

I've got a 16x30 inch window covered with hardware cloth on the short wall of my coop that has their roosting "ladder" in front of it. They absolutely love it, and then in the winter unfortunately, it gets covered with plastic and insulation so there are no drafts. Right above that window about another 10" is their ventilation that is covered and adjusted depending on the temperature of the weather. We must have done something right because none of our single-combed breeds got frostbite! Yay!! I was such a nervous nellie this winter, but I think I've mellowed some!

If there is another place in the coop that they can roost if they want to get away from a draft blowing through the window, then that's good. During the summer they'll probably enjoy roosting where they can get some cool breeze. You'll also want to make sure that rain can't get blown in through the window onto your roosting chickens, too.
