Is it okay to bleach a coop?

I don't think so... you just put 1 part bleach and 9 parts water... I think? Please correct me if I am wrong.

I've been told bleach is inactivated in the presence of dirt. In other words that you have to clean with soap etc., first and then treat with a 10% bleach solution.

I used to soak my plastic pots etc,( I hybridize plants) in it over a couple days but, it doesn't seem to curb a soil mealy bug problem. Maybe you do need to use soap & water first.

When I had the kennel I used to fill a plastic watering can with straight bleach and drizzle over each dog run a couple times a year and after wormings. The dogs would be locked in for an hour or so , until I watered it in to the pea gravel thoroughly. I can tell you the fumes could knock you out in minutes if the ventilation isn't great.

So I really would like to know the prevailing knowledge on this - is it necessary to remove dirt before disinfecting with bleach solution. Or can you just add soap to the bleach mix?

Thanks for any answers on this.

If you use the hose and maybe a soapy brush and brush off the poop from surfaces, then that would prep the coop for disinfectant. If you have a cocci problem in there, bleach will not kill that. Only ammonia will kill the oocysts that cause cocci, but whatever you do, DO NOT MIX ammonia and bleach!
