I know some people are more inclined to say no... but I don't know a breeder near me that sells polish or silkies and I love both the breeds is there any way to get show quality bird through selective breeding starting with hatchery birds?

Anything is possible, but it's not likely. You'd be ahead money wise to find a breeder willing to sell you a trio of birds. By the time you hatch out and cull lots and lots of chicks over several generations you will have spent as much money on feed as you would have spent on some decent birds to start off with.

Well, if you're really not sure on local people - There are plenty here who sell hatching eggs of show quality Polish and Silkies alike.

Usually NO!!! But there is always the exception. Which is what they post pics of in their books.(The exception) Genes are genes and its a gamble! It is possible but not likely!

God Bless!

Added: It is possible to breed up to show quality with hatchery stock to start, YES! BUT It will take ALOT of time (years)and ALOT of money and ALOT of culling!

Just a quick note: The breeding program I am beginning I figure will take me 6 years to achive what I want. The best birds will be bred for quality, the other hens will be used for egg sales, and the extra roo's get a ticket to freezer camp. I started with eggs from 6 different breeders all Great quality and I plan On adding 2 more Top blood lines this fall. All B/B/S JG's

Good Luck and God Bless!

This is going to sound harsh, but I think the truth. If a person asks the question regarding whether or not you can make show stock out of hatchery stuff it is more than likely not the person with the eye or experience to make the correct selections generation after generation to get to the end point.

An inexperienced eye can make hatchery stock out of good breeder quality a lot quicker than an experienced breeder can make good stock out of hatchery stock.

Just saying
