A few months ago my frizzle went broody and hatched 5 eggs, but another hen had snuck into her nest and laid another egg. When the 5 hatched, she abandoned the last egg and so I put it under one of those metal lamps for the few remaining days and it did hatch. So my question is, if I have an insulated box without a lid but with a lamp and a pan of water, could I feasibly hope to hatch eggs in that manner if I monitered the temperature and humidity?

I think it might be tough, but in 6th grade the teacher hatched two chicks using only a 100 watt bulb, in a wood box. I think only 1 chick survived, but my memory is faulty from that long ago.

Imp- I loved the 6th grade.

My best friend tells me about when they were kids, her mom would hatch eggs on top of the hot water heater. I don't see why you couldn't.

Why did she only try to hatch two?

I do not remember, it was 1973. All I really remember is 2 eggs 1 chick. I think both hatched and 1 died within a couple days. Maybe only 2 eggs because it was on an island off the coast of Alaska. Or maybe there were more to start. There were no chickens in town. Have no clue where the eggs came from. I also remembering it being pretty boring.

Imp- With a memory like mine maybe there was no chicks, no 6th grade, no BYC, NO ME.

The setup you are describing sounds like what lots of people would call a home made bator!
If you were to put some kind of lid on it I think your chances of success might be better.
