Is it possible to train a rooster to mate with a hen gently?

He is the ONLY roo now, though I used to have a few more. I let someone come to get all of my extras with the only condition that they had to leave me ONE roo last summer when I had way too many. I was hoping for one of his brothers to be left behind instead since he is a crower but he was the only one that refused to be caught. He was just too fast.

Anyway, this is the only gentle roo I've ever had. One of my poor hens used to always have a bare back since she was the favorite of the last roo that I had. I gave him to a co-worker who had another more dominant rooster to put him in his place. In all of the years I've kept chickens, this is the first time I've ever witnessed this balancing act. I've had gentle roos before, but even then they had to grab the neck feathers.

My rooster has no problem mating in front of me. He almost got into a fight with my large, dog, attacked my small dog (not sure if he confused her for a chicken? She's a chihuahua, luckly she didn't get hurt), he attacked me once for no reason, I was with the chickens, turned my back and he wouldnt stopped attacking me until the third kick. Today he attacked me again because I was treating one of the sick chickens and she freaked out when I picked her up. He's an *******! I'd butcher him but I like how he's protective of the girls, he watches them and helps break up fights.

You should definitely cull him.there are hundreds of excellent roosters that need a home out there and most roosters will protect their hens and break up fight anyway but are gentler and friendlier. He really sounds like a dangerous roo and could be a safety hazard to your pets
Good luck

I agree with you. today my cockerel pecked me when I got my other cockerel to treat his comb. I am so happy that my boy is protective even of another cockerel. if I do not upset any member of his flock, he never attacks me. I am so proud of him. I am getting more girls now because I want to keep both of them (another cockerel was bought as pullet!).

Ugh, He's attacked my chihuahua for NO REASON, He's tried to get into a fight with my dog a couple times, he attacked my dog today when he went into the chicken coop with me, he's attacked me twice even though he is scared shitless of me, and he almost killed my favorite chicken today who is a rooster. He chased him around the house and I found him trapped in a corner with the rooster on top of him. This happen because I have two flocks, one was in quarinteen, now they have been out with my chickens for a week, the black (mean) rooster has been with two flocks, but the quartieen flock is his favorite because they are mature women so he hangs with mostly them, my rooster went into their coop today, and that was what broke out the fight with the black (mean) rooster. The thing is, the other rooster is mean to these older hens (but he also doesn't know them) the black rooster is fine with them and even comes to the chicken's attention if one is being mean to another chicken, I have one chicken that is crippled too so he helps protect her, that's the only reason I have been keeping him honestly. The other rooster is honestly my favorite chicken, he lets me pet and pick him up! He comes up to me and talks to me, it's just, will he stop being mean to these new hens? Is it normal for roosters to chase new hens and try to mount them? The black rooster never did that. When he was allowed with these hens, that was when I first started seeing him court them and that was when he started being rude.

It's totally normal for a rooster to chase around hens and grab them to try and mount. Some Roos are more gentle with them from an earlier stage but eventually when the hens accept him.He should do a little dance with his wing and jump on her without a problem. As time passes by the rooster that doesn't like the older hens should come to accept them.
As i said before, if I was in your position I would just cull or get rid of the mean roo because he sounds like a total nuisance
