Yesterday my kids said one of our chickens was acting weird when they let them out of the coop in the morning. I checked on her and she seems fine..... just a little more of a loner from her flock then usual.

Today, something just wasnt right. This morning her tail feathers were down, head hung low and she was a bit lethargic. She did not follow the other chickens out of the coop. Just stood there in a corner. When i got back home after drop off she was alone under her shelter and her butt was covered in poop (Not like that yesterday) Wondering if she might be egg bound since she hasnt layed in a few weeks i decided to bring her inside and put her in a warm water bath and wash off the poo. Then i noticed all sorts of maggots floating in the water. upon further inspection it looks like she has a surface wound about an inch under her vent.

I cleaned that all up and put some Corona Ointment on the area. During the whole bath process i noticed that she was wheezing a bit. Not bad and there were no sneezes or coughs. Just a small wheez. Her crop seems empty too.

She is isolated and away from future fly damage. What are your thoughts on the wheezing though? I put some corid in her water and gave her some soaked chicken feed and a bite of sauerkraut for good gut bacteria.

Thinking i should treat her with an antibiotic too just in case there is a respiratory infection??

Suggestions and advise welcomed!

I wish I could be of more help but wanted to alert you to the maggot situation--it is highly unlikely you washed all the maggots away. Maggots can be lethal, they may be inside her vent. I'm not sure the treatment but suggest you search this site for maggots and you will get lots of information--it's pretty ugly! I think this is very important to do quickly. Maybe someone will chime in about the wheezing and maggots. I just wanted to let you know taking her from the fly source did not eliminate the problem. I pray they are not in her. Keep us posted.

Thanks tumbleweed farms for the info. I'm watching it closely. Haven't seen anymore maggots. She is looking like she has an respiratory infection.struggling to breath and about dropping from her mouth? (Not her nose, wierd?)

I bought a new bag of antibiotics and out het on the 800mg dose. Force drinking her with a syringe note every couple hours.
