Is it safe to eat a soft shelled egg?

I have looked around for a post regarding this burning question, and can't find one.
Is it safe to eat? Is safer if found immediately?
Haven't had any, but imagine I might, since they are a hot topic, here on the forum.

I wouldn't simply because there is no shell or bloom to keep bacteria from entering the eggs. If found too late, I throw 'em away. When found early, I feed them back to the hens or I give it to my dog.
