You could kill and refrigerate but not freeze. Keeping the carcass cool is key. One of the tricks you could do prior to refrigerating is to "field dress" you birds. Basically you open the bird between the chest and vent, reach in and pull out the innards. Many hunters do this to game birds in the field.
