Is it to late to start turkeys for Thanksgiving?

Oh he has gotten the message. I scattered the fermented carcasses of 150 fileted bass all around his mailbox last summer about 3 weeks after it happened. I have been waiting for his mutt that likes to crap on our mums to make his last visit but seeems the neighbor is keeping him at home these days.

How long did it take to get that big?
My BB poults are growing quickly, but are slowly being let out to forage.
I dont think I want a 42 lber, and the whole point is to not have a frozen turkey . . . so no early butchering

Is it feasible to think that I can keep my BB turkeys from getting that big in 8 months, or is it gonna happen no matter what?

I got my BR poults the middle of June of last year. We processed 2 of our toms in Oct. One was around 13 lbs and the other was around 15 lbs. We kept the bigger one. He was already around 30 lbs live weight. Each bird had plenty of delicious meat. I'm a dark meat fan, but the white meat was very good. I have learned, however that I will cut the bird up next time to roast. That way I can remove the white meat at it's delicious time and cook the dark until it's ready. My family was very sad when the left overs were gone on the first bird. I over cooked the 2nd bird

so it made fine soup.

Did your neighbor think it was wild? I lost three Canadian Geese that way. Some idiot thought they were wild. Duh...I could almost feed them out of my hand and raised them from chicks.

I believe I had gotten them in late April or sometime in May not really sure, but by The 2nd.week in Nov. I had them processed . They do grow very quickly on high protein Turkey Starter and then Turkey starter as the summer months mine did not free range but where in a large wooden area fence in pen , I did feed all the scraps from the garden and grass cutting and around some time in late Aug. and part of Sept .I started to mix 50% chicken grower and 50 % turkey grower plus some crack corn & sunflower seed mix up altogether . By mid Sept. and Oct & Nov. I when back to higher protein turkey grower and crack corn and still all the grass clipping and what ever was left over in the garden and weeds . I pump them up with food during the last few months . Cuz I wanted big Juice birds , If you really don’t want them as large I would cut back on the feed daily as they start getting older to keep there weight around the 20 lbs mark , if ur getting the early in the year – if not just get ur birds later say in June and feed them as much as they want for the 4-5 months . BB Bronze and Giant White are very Large bird , if you wanted a smaller size bird Like the Bourbon Reds and Royal Palms are a nice size 15 to 20 Lbs are just as tasty and juice and won’t eat as much as the Broad Breast Turkeys .

For Thanksgiving and Christmas are turkeys Fresh The rest goes into Turkey Freezer for the rest of the year and they still taste as good as the fresh one's .
Remember the store bought turkeys are raise on farms with close quarters and who know what else there placing in there food and water to pump these guys up in a short time period ,
If you was to cook at the same time in the same oven your hand raise turkey VS a Store purchase turkey roughly the same weight .......see how much water you end up in ur pan on both , see how much smaller one is then the other , and lastly taste both. The fresh one will have much less water in the pan , The Fresh one will be as larger or a bit smaller then is was--- the frozen one will shrink a lot , and as for taste and juice well to me fresh home grown takes the door prize or store bough.

It just like store eggs VS Fresh laid eggs ,,,,,,,,,,Fresh one ‘s have it by a long shot

No he did not think it was wild. He also killed the Royal Palm in my avatar and another young Royal Palm also. I was at work but my son was out in the yard and heard him shoot 3 times and some of the other turkeys came home with blood splatters on them.

I had a Rio tom dress out at 18 lbs., which I think is rather big for those. He was definitely bigger than his friend. His friend has been slated for the chopping block for nearly two years now, so he'll probably be a little tough, but he'll taste just fine.

I doubt I will ever buy another store turkey. We had one given to us, and it's still in the deep freeze. They just don't taste as good.

Free-range rules!

Heritage birds are perfect for us, since the family usually goes to my mom's for Thanksgiving. My son is off to college, so it's just me, my hubby and daughter now. I cut them up like a giant chicken and cook the pieces as I need them.

hmm i read this and i thought of was the adam sandler thanksgiving song
