I've just been a lurker here for awhile, so I'm firstly gonna say "Hi!".

Now......

Today is day 21 of my black maran incubation, I had my first chick of the batch hatch yesterday morning without a hitch. Yesterday afternoon, I had one pip and unzip part way. Against my better judgement today... I grabbed the egg and found the poor little thing developing shrink wrap, even the remains of the yolk sac had dried and fused his head to his belly... I moistened and assisted with the hatch, I'm glad I caught it but now I'm kind of stressing about my hatch (and my new chick). My hygrometer said humidity of 65-70% (I've been struggling with humidity for my last 2 hatches), but after the chick drying out I added another sponge and upped it to 85%. So my question, is it too late for my unpipped chicks, or do they still have a chance now that I bumped up the humidity???

TIA,
Christina

IMO until the pip, humidity is less of an issue so if they're still viable and the humidity is higher they're ok.
Also, in my experience, unless one spends the money, hygrometers are notoriously inaccurate. If it is adjustable, I put them outside for a while, go to Accuweather.com, put in my zip code and check the current humidity and set my hygrometer to that number.

Oh, and Hello!

Thank you, that gives me hope! I have 2 hygrometers and they're both different, so i knew accuracy was questionable, but this one reads higher than the other one, so I had hoped this hatch would go better than my last. I will have to test it outside, great idea!
