Hello,
It seems that every where I read and look it says that once a chick or chicken becomes sick or has problems it never fully recovers. Not only does it not fully recover but if they're chicks they will lay less eggs when they become chickens. Is this true? and more importantly is it true for the condition of pasting up, where their vent gets plugged up. Thanks for any input.

Sam,

I can only tell you my experience. I have treated sick birds and they have gotten well. I have treated sick chicks and they have as well. None of my chickens have gotten really sick or had an other issues so I cant really comment on it. Pasty butt is not an illness. Just put the chick's butt in warm water and gentlly pull off the poo. some people put vasoline or olive oil on their butts to stop it happening. I find that if you mix alittle grit in with their food it stops.

There are some diseases, such as MG, MS, and Mareks that infect the bird for life. When and if they recover they become carriers.

There are other diseases and infections that are 100% curable.

As for pasty butt well that's not really a disease. It's just something that happens to chicks and some chickens.
