Is it true that if you breed a gold dutch bantam with a silver dutch bantam the colourings wont mix and you will get "pure coloured" chicks???

No.

At least not on the males. Females carry only one copy of the Silver/gold gene. They are either silver or gold, so yes, they are always pure for whichever gene they carry. Males carry two copies of the gene, meaning that they can have two copies of silver, two copies of gold or one copy of each.

Sonoran is correct, the males will carry both genes, but the pullets will be the same color as the rooster you use.

Im not familiar with dutch bantams but any silver/ gold birds are counterparts. Genetically silver is denoted S/S and gold is denoted s+/s+(in cocks) as was mentioned Silver is a sex linked gen which means that hens only have one copy S/- is a silver female.

S is silver because silver is dominant over gold s+(the plus is a denotation meaning this is the gene that exits in the wildtype or red jungle fowl)

anyhoo

say you cross a silver hen with a gold cock you will get Gold hens(yes which ever way you cross it the hens come out pure) and you get impure heterzygous Cocks which are silverish with a yellow tinge depends on what e allele you are on.

like wise if you use a gold hen and a silver cock you will get silver hens(pure) and impure Cocks.

However

The impure cocks are stil usefull because...

You can breed them back to pure hens and get:

Impure cock to a gold hen produces 25% gold hens 25% silver hens and 25% gold cocks and 25% impure cocks(like the father)

Impure cock to a silver hen produces 25% gold hens 25% silver hens 25% Silver cocks and 25% impure cocks.


So it might be that I wrote it down confusingly, however you will always get pure hens from the cross and then the impure cocks are usefull for breeding.

This works great if you are breeding something like silver penciled and gold penciled, however if you are breeding something like Duckwing where the Gold also has Autosomal red...then it becomes a bit more complex but still useful.
