Is it unusual for 13 week old roo to try to mount?

I have 44 chickens, aged 13 weeks. I have 3 roos in the mix. Yesterday I saw one roo (RIR) attempt to mount a pullet, who ran squawking. Does this mean anything .... like, could it mean that the girls are close to laying?

It just means that the young roo is trying out his newly found skills, and it sounds like your pullets want no part of it.

For some reason, roos mature earlier than hens. We put 39 roos in the freezer at age 10 weeks and several had already started crowing and that many more had already tried their hand at mounting.
The average age of expecting egg laying is 18 - 28 weeks.

At 10 weeks old my former roo was trying to catch and mount anything that moved.

I couldn't put mine in freezer camp so I gave him to a family that really wanted him and he has several ladies to romance.

The three extra roos that I gave away as babies have 80 hens between them. Last time I saw them their little tongues were hanging out, but I dunno why.
