Does anyone have information if lawn fertilizer, like Scotts, is ok around free ranging hens. The stuff I'm putting on the rest of the yard is not a weed killer, strictly yard fertilizer and I was wondering if I could spread the stuff where the chickens free range and if I need to keep the chickens in their coop and run, how long should i keep them off their part of the yard after i apply the fertilizer. Thanks to anyone who could help

I recommend you call the manufacturer and ask them, the phone number should be on the bag. There was a post awhile back and the member accidently poisoned his birds in this manner.

I just got off the phone with Scotts, who makes this 21-0-0 product I like to use to keep things green thru the fall and winter. For this particular product, the fertilizer is on the outside of the pellet, which supposedly is a bio-inert carrier material, so once you put it down and water it in, the chemical fertilizer is on the outside of the carrier. He was confident that the pellets we see laying around weeks after we fertilize are inert material that, if injested, come out the back end unchanged and without doing harm.

I'm still mulling it over, and I advise you all think about it too. Make sure you call the manufacturer and ask specific questions about specific products.

Hope this helps!
