Is Marek's contagious to parrots and other cage birds?

I don't think you're insensitive at all. I know what end is looking to be inevitable for him. I also have no issues with necropsies. I am literally just worried right now about cross-infection to my other birds. I feel like I am just waiting to find out if my "kids" will get this horrible virus, and I hope to God they can't.

Iv raised several hundred chickens and have seen similar symptoms. Most will not make it two weeks with marek. Marek is contagious to other chickens. I'm not a vet, but I wouldn't worry about the parrots. Iv had several chics that were lethargic just as yours and they ended up fine. As long as the other chics that it started with are fine I wouldn't worry at all about spreading any disease.

I have at least 10 with the ocular form of Marek's and they've had it for at least one year.

Knock on wood, I have turkeys, peafowl, ducks, geese and chickens. So far, the only disease that I've seen in more than one species is histomoniasis, so I think you're going to be fine, really.

Thanks for the reassurance. I am pretty calm and collected with most any issue in life until it is something like this, then, I stress like crazy. I have no children, so my birds are me and my boyfriend's little family, and I am super careful about trying to keep them healthy and safe.

Definitely not coccidiosis in his case. I have encountered that once and know what that can do. His poop is perfect, firm and not smelly.

Also, I do intend to call around and find out whether or not TSC chicks are vaccinated. I have heard different things, too, so it's time to know for myself.

Hey Sparrow, a few months ago I did a bunch of research on Marek's cause it was spreading around my area. What I remember and I may be wrong is that is seems to affect only chickens. I do not remember reading about Marek's and any other birds and I do remember reading that it does not seem to infect waterfowl or wild birds. I also read it was airborne. The lady I had spoken with who had confirmed Marek's decimating her flock was losing a bird every couple of weeks and it had been going on for a few months until she hardly had any birds left and still had them popping up with symptoms and dying. Needless to say I did NOT sell her any birds. I know that the incubation period of Marek's can vary in individual birds.
While this may not be good news for your chickens I think that the rest of your birds will be safe.
Please let us know what the pathologist says.

I sincerely hope that is correct. I worry about my other chickies, too, but if he has Marek's, the damage is done. :[ I still hope it is something else. I will definitely be updating with whatever I hear from the experts tomorrow.

i beleive silly city girl is correct i also have read where only chickens and some other poultry get it and that pet birds cant.i hope that its true.look it upon the net it will tell you . good luck

Hey, need a little direction, or next step to take with 3 week chicks with cocci?
Chicks were from 2 broody Mom's. Due to crowded pens, removed each Mom from peeper pens outside. Weather warm, chicks fiesty and fun. Then it rains and rains, etc., then abruptly turned cold. I brought all (14), 3 week old chicks inside, warm lamp, food, water. Everything fine, until Friday am, noticed a bit of bloody poo, unable to track the chick who had it. I took them off med feed, to regular chick feed and buttermilk. All have good appetite for food and water. After 2 hours post feeding I started anti-biotic protocol (Sulmet). Bloody stools are few, no longer bright red, but darker red/clotting.

Since I had Sulmet on hand, I immediately started dosing them with it.
( 2 days on. Next recommends 2 days off. Then 2 days on. Then 2 days off. Then 1 day on. Follow up with add'l electrolytes and probiotics)

Well, they are at 1 day off yesterday (Sunday) post being 2 days on.., Giving electrolytes. Today, I'll start them again on protocol...

1. I would like to switch them to corrid tomorrow if I can find it. Would that be OK?
2. I have 6 week olds that I incubated and kept inside for 4+ weeks, no symptoms. They have been in their pen 2 weeks now.
Is it safe to think they have immuities built up, or should I treat them too, with Corrid?
3. We have 2 Roos with 5 hens each at 2 to 3 years old. Separate pens. Symptom free. Wormed on schedule. Should we treat them with corrid?
4. Read here that eggs OK to eat even though hen on treatment with Corrid. Also read documentation to the opposit. We have a small customer base to purchase our eggs, are the eggs OK to consume?

Don't want to overmedicate, if the immune system has it under control on these other birds.
