Is my Barred Rock a roo or pullet?

I think it's just a hatchery BR pullet. Whoever bred this bird needs to improve their stock though.

The leg coloring is right for a BR but the "barring" is a hot mess. Where did this bird come from?

I got it from Big R in Colorado...their website says they use Hoover's Hatchery

Well there ya go. Hoover's quality isn't the highest. But for beginner birds they are OK. Enjoy your little one!

I would just enjoy your birds and learn all you can at this point. Don't worry about quality so much, except for health. If your goal is to have nice fresh eggs for your family, then you are doing great. If you'd like to show chickens in the future there are lots of breeders that would be able to provide quality stock. You can find some on this website in the breeding section, or even the classifieds. Find the official site for the breed you are interested in a Google search and make contact if you want to. There really are a lot of options and it's easy to get carried away!

Yup! The goal is eggs for the family! Thanks for all your input. I'll have to post more pictures as "Hot Mess" grows up! Haha now it has a name.
