Is my Barred Rock chick or rooster or a hen?

We picked up our baby chicks today, yay! We want 3 hens; no more - no less! I know vent sexing isn't 100% and I'm paranoid that I will end up with a roo even though the bin I chose from were supposedly all pullets. I tried to do as much research as possible to help determine the sex of chicks. We got 2 RIR and 1 BR. I tried to pick out the RIR's that had the best chipmunk stripes and I thought when it came to the Barred Rock, it would be easy too. I was looking for the blackest chick with the most defined white spot on her head. But it was much harder than I anticipated. All the chicks seemed to have yellow spots (not white) and they weren't a clearly defined dot but rather uneven. And they all looked black in the cardboard boxes all huddled together. But now that I have it home, she seems a little gray.

I wanted to get everyone else's opinions on the matter...do you think this is definitely a girl? Or will I be surprised in the upcoming weeks when I wake up to crowing? :) Same goes for the RIR's too but I begged my husband for a BR as all he wanted were RIR's. So I'd be heartbroken if the one that I really wanted was a boy. Silly, I know but I can't help thinking about it.

It is way too soon to tell. Post again when it is 3 wks old or so.
x2 Good luck with your chicks!

It's not too soon to tell about the Barred Rock. It's a pullet. They are easy to sex at hatch as soon as they are fluffed out. Sexing cues with them are about 90% accurate and I've been doing this for several years. Some fool you, but that is a girl, so you did great!

This link is good for Barred Rocks, Cuckoo Marans and Dominiques and has very good photos.

I would recommend that you start your own thread with a new picture of your chick. When you post on old threads from other people, it confuses the folks looking to help because we are trying to look at the OP's question. You either will not get an answer to your question or you will end up hijacking someone else's thread by mistake. I would love to see a licture of your confusing baby--in a new thread!
