We picked up our baby chicks today, yay! We want 3 hens; no more - no less! I know vent sexing isn't 100% and I'm paranoid that I will end up with a roo even though the bin I chose from were supposedly all pullets. I tried to do as much research as possible to help determine the sex of chicks. We got 2 RIR and 1 BR. I tried to pick out the RIR's that had the best chipmunk stripes and I thought when it came to the Barred Rock, it would be easy too. I was looking for the blackest chick with the most defined white spot on her head. But it was much harder than I anticipated. All the chicks seemed to have yellow spots (not white) and they weren't a clearly defined dot but rather uneven. And they all looked black in the cardboard boxes all huddled together. But now that I have it home, she seems a little gray.
I wanted to get everyone else's opinions on the matter...do you think this is definitely a girl? Or will I be surprised in the upcoming weeks when I wake up to crowing?
Same goes for the RIR's too but I begged my husband for a BR as all he wanted were RIR's. So I'd be heartbroken if the one that I really wanted was a boy. Silly, I know but I can't help thinking about it.
