The guy I got this bird from off of Craigslist said it was a female Black Copper Marans. We'll he was sure lying about it being a female, so I'm now wondering if he's even a purebred. Any input?????

Thank you so much! Thanks for the tag @2ndTink
Altho he's over colored in the chest he looks like BCM to my eyes.
What I see is slate legs, pink feet and lightly feathered which is French SOP standard. He's nice and big, with short and wide stance. Wide in the chest but can't tell if that continues all the way to the rear..Nice tail set as far as I can see. Comb and eyes look correct also. His copper looks very nice on him but like I said he's over colored in the chest. Need much better pics but over all I personally think he's a very nice Black Copper.
Mating him to hens with minimal copper will fix his over coloring in progeny.
If you want a much better and thorough evaluation than I can give, post some pics of him in the Marans SOP thread. There's experts there with much better knowledge than I, take lots of pics from every angle.... Front, back, both sides, rear and over top. Closeup of eyes, legs and comb.

Hope that helps you..I've got an over colored roo also that I'm test mating with my hens at the moment to see what's producing.![]()
Well, I'm not showing them, nor am I a breeder who sells chicks. I just like having my chickens and I like coming up with different colored eggs and interesting looking birds. This rooster is good enough for me. I'm more interested in if he'll pass a dark egg color. Only time will tell. Thank you for your input! In my opinion, he looks like a pure bred BCM, but not particularly a well bred BCM. I am slightly annoyed at myself for always ranting on about this, but there is a key difference, especially with chickens. If you’d like my insight on this, feel free to ask. To save a big long lecture, I’m going to refrain from saying much more on it unless asked!!!
I’m also happy to explain why he isn’t particularly well bred if you’d like.
You’ll often find them at poorly bred marans are created when people focus too much on egg colour, so hopefully he will have very good dark egg genes to pass on. I wish you luck. If you are not a show breeder, and he is a well behaved, healthy rooster, then that’s all you could want.Well, I'm not showing them, nor am I a breeder who sells chicks.
