Is my canary normal?

I have been letting my canary have free range of the house. But, now he is always on the counter top looking for food, he will eat out of the pots and pans on the stove( after they have cooled. of course) eats toast out of the toaster, he will go into a bag of chips and pull them out and eat them right next to me. He perches on my coffee cup and will eat sugar out of the sugar bowl.

He gets angry and yells if we try to stop him. Is this normal, or have I let him get out of control

Sounds like a very loved little bird, he's lucky to have you. Sounds like normal behavior, just make sure he's not eating anything that could potentially be harmful like chocolate & avocado, or houseplants that could impact his health. I actually had to lol while reading your post just imagining this little character..I too use to have a little song canary that was given lot's of free flight, but unfortunately he flew out the door..so please beware of open doors and windows. Enjoy your feathered friend.

i had a house finch a couple of years back that did the same thing... it was a wild bird, but used to come in the house before i would go to school and have breakfast with us... sit on the window sill inside the kitchen and sing to the birds outside... LOL... but one spring he didn't come...

i'm trying to get a canary as a pet like you, but i don't know how to get them used to being outside the cage without them flying away...

They can be bossy little goobers, can't they?

I haven't had any canaries, but I have a Fisher's lovebird and a peach-front conure who both think they run the whole show, and do their best to lord it over the rest of the flock.

Your little guy is such a cutie!

ETA: be very, VERY careful about his being out when company comes by. Even though YOU are aware of his presence and location, someone who comes by may not be, and may also not watch where they reach, step, or sit. My husband's niece lost her beloved cockatiel when a friend of hers came bursting through the front door into the living room where she was playing with her bird. The girl charged in the door and stepped directly onto the bird, crushing him.

Always make sure your little guy is safe BEFORE you open the door. We keep our doors locked even during the day, partly for this reason.

He is a sweet little guy and we always keep him in his cage if anyone is coming over. Or if we are going in and out. I would hate to lose him out the door. He can be a sneeky little bugger . So, I am sure he would sneak out if given the chance.
