is my chicks toe dead?

I would hold off untill tomorrow.
Tonight I would put a drop of Listerine mouth wash on it,
It really kills germs with out harming the tissue any more like peroxide would.
"NOT MINTY SCOPE"

If there is anysort of open skin I would hold off on the lysterine as it can cause a chemical burn, unless watered down a bit.

Flufnstuffs~FluffySilkies :

Sure water it down a bit..

We all know it is yucky stuff. But it works great.

Yup. I prefer the mint version myself, not as bad

One of our chicks has the same dead looking toe, but the black doesn't extend underneath like in your pictures. Don't know how long it was like that since we may have just missed it when we picked them up (4 days ago). The chick is eating and not favoring the other foot, so I'll just clean it off again and see what happens.

My chicks toe looks similar. And now it is starting on the other toe. I put some antiseptic on it and a piece of masking tape because it was more toe color and he was getting picked. What do you think this is and does anyone know if it is contagious? Not a happy chick.

Her toe is actually looking a lot better. We have been keeping a close eye on it and it actually appears as if it may heal, or as silkiechicken mentioned the very tip may end up falling off. The pix does make it look as though the black spread to the bottom, but that isnt so, that was just something we couldnt get off at the time. The toes is much lighter pink in most spots, so we aren't doing anything for now, just watching it. HOPEFULLY she will turn out fine with the toe.

Another pullet has a bit of black on her toe, and I did notice whatnow? and lhotsedog both said they had something similar. STRANGE, I wonder what this is...
