im probly mistaken but i believe that is most of the ones with tufts that still look like a normal chicken and not a silkie. there is also sultans and Pyncheon who have a tuft. allot with tufts out there. i think he looks like a sulmtaler Coloration maybe x with a black ameraucana ... lol most of these weird names are sold on greenfire farms and ive never heard of them.

I love all these chickens with the tufts! Suppose it's time for me to start looking since over half of my flock is looking to be male instead of female. If anyone has any available in the area of coastal North Carolina, let me know! Apparently I am terrible when picking little ones out of straight runs. I've heard it's tough to raise chicks born this late in the year though. Does anyone have experience with raising chicks hatched in the fall?

I would say it has polish mixed in. Seems the most likely.

There are 3 roos in this picture:

1000

The reddish one is also a EE rooster.

No!!!! Really? That would mean I somehow managed to pick all roosters when getting my straight run EEs. :-( I did notice some of the long, pointy saddle feathers but thought I must be wrong.

I'm so sorry :( That really sucks, doesn't it.. Are you allowed to have roosters?

The grey one on the far right looks like an EE to me, and a girl.

I'm not allowed to have roosters where I live unfortunately, and parting with them is the hardest part. Especially the EEs since I raised them from babies. The other grey one is an EE, but I got her when she was much older and she's so skittish that she won't come near me like the others no matter how many treats I offer. I put some other pictures of the red EE here: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/694336/ee-roo-or-hen. I am so bummed. This means that out of the 12 chickens I got originally, only 4 are actually hens. Apparently I am terrible at picking out the ladies.

Skittish is a good way to describe girls :p

Boys are much friendlier before they reach manhood (before they start mating and crowing anyway). The girls are much better once they reach POL. I raise a lot from chicks, and only my female silkies seem to be friendly before laying time (but they can't see, so they can't run lol).

I read up on sexing tips for EE day olds, though it isn't 100% of course, I just looked for chicks with a lot of eyeliner. I ended up with only 1 boy and 4 girls. Perfect, because I did want to breed them and get more EEs.

I hadn't heard that you could use the eyeliner as an indicator. Thanks for the tip! I'll remember that the next time I try to pick my chicks from a group of straight run babies. I'm hopeful that you're right about these ladies becoming more friendly once they reach POL. Now that I'll be down to only 4 chicks from the 12 I originally selected, it will be disheartening if they're all scared of me. Btw, does anyone want a rooster or 4?

My EE's were all skittish except my rooster. The girls are coming around now that they are 21 weeks old. They are starting to squat for me, and will eat out of my hand. My boy Stanley did from the get-go. He was the slowest to develop, and was always the most daring. :)
