I am multiplying length x width and dividing by 4 to get the size for my run. Is this correct? I will let my hens out when I am home during the day but they will need a run big enough to stay happy in most of the time. I will have 20-30 hens. Thanks for your input!

If you are having 30 hens then the recommended minimum size for the run (not including 4 square feet per hen in the coop) is 10 square feet per hen in the run.

So for 30 hens, you would want something like a 10 x 30 pen. Or another combination to end up with 300 as the total.

But REALLY they are happier with more. So the bigger the better!

Honestly with that many hens if you squeeze them you can have pecking issues.

For standard sized birds, 4 sq ft per bird for inside coop space and 10 sq ft per bird for run space. I think the outdoor run space can be less if the birds will free range most of each day, but the inside coop space should really not be less than 4 sq ft per bird.

Oh this is so helpful! Thank you all so much. I was going by the 4 feet inside the coop! I do want to make the run as large as possible. I think I will have room for a 20x18 run so I think it will be big enough for 20-30 hens. I live in a place where we have many coyote, fox, boar, etc. so I think I will let them out during the day when I am home but I really want them to be comfortable and happy in the run.
Thanks, CJ
