I Love it!!! I want to make one like that! Hope you don't mind if I use your idea. But how do you get the eggs out? Does the top open or something? Are their hinges in the back?

Please, use it! Yes, the top does open. There is no floor in it, just corner pieces to hold the sides together. It is chock full of hay that they move around regularly.

I think your larger nesting boxes are MUCH better! I have Jersey Giants, which are closer in size to your BOs and Australorps and they wouldn't fit in the first nesting boxes you made. They are big girls! The new boxes will work great, I am sure!

What are the dimensions of the opening in your community nest box? How do you get to the eggs? Does the top lift up?

Without going out to measure it, I'd say it's 8" wide by 12" tall. And yes, the top does lift up. 5 of my 10 hens fit in there together. I have 2 Aussie girls and a couple Cochin and they fit in their just fine. I ordered a couple Jersey girls, we'll see how they fit!

ChicksR4Me, those new nest boxes look great! That should be plenty of room!

I have BA's and BR's that use a nest box about the size of your smaller one. They have never layed anywhere else. They free range and could choose a million other places.
