Today I removed all the old bedding from the laying boxes and replaced it with new bedding. Of course everyone was excited, but the hens' excitement was absolutely nothing compared to my rooster's. He began clucking like he does when he's found something nice to eat and as I put the shavings in each box, followed me and looked into each previous box. I didn't think that was all that strange; he usually gets excited whenever I do something to the coop. But as I was leaving, I happened to look back through the window, and there he was, attempting to squeeze his huge body into this tiny nest box

Now I know that he is quite possibly the most ridiculous chicken I own, and I daily remind him that he is the silliest ninnyhammer that has ever walked the earth, but I have never seen him actually sit in a laying box. What is wrong with him?

Nothing wrong with him. Just getting all excited, hoping the hens will catch his excitement and use the boxes to make him a father. Really, he's just telling the hens that the boxes are perfect for nurseries.

Nothing wrong with him.. My rooster used to get sooo excited every time I would replace the nest box material.. One day, I worked all afternoon, adding fencing, house, and shavings to an new area for a hen who would soon join them..... Well, he strutted, he sang what sounds like the egg song, he crowed, he danced......called all the girls over... I told my husband about it and he said " Sounds like a man to me , taking credit for all your hard work!" LOL...
