Is my sizzle a hen or roo?

Somehow I ended up with this pretty little thing. I wonder if it is male or female. (S)he tends





to stay by herself as opposed to mingling with the larger birds. I'd like to find her a friend but would like to know how I can tell the difference. (I was told she was a sizzle and we call her Cecilia) No crowing yet and no eggs. She is about16 weeks old. Can you help?

Thanks. I really enjoyed the flock's favorite poem. Do these little creatures need a mate/friend? I feel bad for her to be alone when she separates herself from the rest. Everyone needs someone. She's very friendly. I'm not sure how easy it will be to find one. I guess a silky would work, right? They are so soft.

What is the difference between a sizzle or a frizzle? Do they look alike? I was hoping for a hen. I may try for another hen instead of a roo.

I don't really want to breed them just have a buddy for her. They are so cute.

A sizzle is a frizzled silkie. Frizzle just referes to the genetic defect that causes the feathers to curl outward instead of inward like on a normal chicken. Cochin are very commonly frizzled but frizzle can refer to different breeds with that same trait. Sizzle are specifically silkies that have that gene. They do look different but still have those same crazy feathers.

Our little Cecilia is a delight. I had gotten an incubator last year and I got eggs from anyone who would share. Someplace, I got 6eggs that were Cochins and I had to get rid of them very early on due to their temperament. What feisty little things they were. Cecilia was a huge surprise. I have read about frizzles, sizzles, a frazzle????
Are these little birds just for enjoyment? When I was a young girl we had bantams and they just kind of ran around the farm looking cute. Are frizzles and sizzles shown in competition? I'm glad I've kept her and am looking for a friend for her, not for breeding but for a friend. She seems to keep to herself.
I'm also amazed at how some breeds do that. I have 2 silver spangled hamburg pullets that seem to hang together, like they know they belong together. They were hatched with EE's and Marans.

Frizzle is recognised for all breeds, although it is probably most common in cochin, polish and serama. Sizzle is not recognised. So, for example, a frizzled non-bearded partridge silkie could win Best or Breed or even Show Champion, whereas a sizzle, no matter how excellent the quality, cannot. Some consider sizzles to be a variety of silkies; others want to have them recognized as their own breed. Personally I fall into the later camp as by definition a silkie must have silkied feathers.

(Note that the frizzled NB partridge silkie winning BB or Show Champ are possibilities, but not likelihoods.)
