Okay my fellow chicken lovin' friends. The question is whether our Blue Ameraucana chicken should keep her name, Rozz, because she is indeed a hen...OR if his name should be changed to Fozz, because he is actually a roo.

The details are as follows:

  • hatch date 4/18/2014
  • purchased as a 6-week old pullet from a local breeder
  • pics taken today, 9/5/2014
  • currently about 20-weeks old
  • heard crowing this morning

Please note pea comb, possible spurs, feathers and overall stature and then place your vote.

Roos are not allowed in our city, so I just assume start emotionally preparing our animal-loving daughter now if we are going to need to part ways with this one.

Many thanks in advance for sharing your expertise.

That's definitely a beautiful blue Ameraucana rooster--no doubt about it. I wish I could take him.

Note the shiny hackle and long, pointed saddle feathers that are a darker color than the body feathers?

He IS very handsome!...with a lovely crow.

I really wish we could keep him. Unfortunately, Craig's list here he comes. Anybody able to advise as to what a fair asking price would be for this guy?

Also, have I any place to go back to the breeder and ask for a refund?

It's definitely a rooster. No doubt about it. It wouldn't hurt to call the breeder and ask if they have any guarantee on their started pullets. At 6 weeks, it's usually not too difficult to tell the males and females apart. Of course, sometimes you get boys that just develop slower than the others. I think that if you paid a premium for a started pullet, they should be willing to work with you at least a little. Just be polite and see what they say. Good luck! :)

My current blue Amer cockerel hatched with a single comb and developed gold leakage (essentially became an EE). I'm working toward a blue like you have!

I'd call the seller and see what they'll do, but it's been an awful long time. And while the seller may refund you purchase price, she may well not take the bird back due to biosecurity reasons. Listing your location in your profile may help find a home for him. His price will just depend on your market. I just sold a fairly nice splash Ameraucana rooster, 1 year old, for $5, and felt lucky to get that. My area's glutted with cockerels.
