Is Sand a good option in Texas?

Hi Im from Texas and I am almost ready to move my chicks out of the brooder and into our new coop with attatched run. I plan on using sand in my run. Our friends also use sand and they really like it. They have had their setup for about 2 years now.

What type of sand?
How many chickens?

I haven't gotten my sand yet. I am going to look at home depot or lowes first. I still have some time to get that. I have 11 pullets and they are all different. I have some wyandottes, a polish, some marans, an sapphire olive egger, ameraucana, welsummer, salmon faverolle, speckled Sussex.

They used a bagged sand. Not sure which brand they used.
