Is selenium the same as amprol in chick starter?

My not-so-little chickies are now 24 days old and I've been feeding them medicated chick starter that contains amprol.....so yesterday I sent hubby to the Co-op feed store in town (very SMALL town) and he comes back with a bag of starter that is supposedly medicated but does not contain amprol. Instead, it contains selenium.

I did a search on the forum here and got lots of topics about crook neck and giving chicks selenium vitamins, but nothing about whether this is as good as amprol, or even close to the same thing. Are they two sides of the same coin? The girl at the store seemed to think so, but I dunno.....

I would like to continue feeding my chicks a similar food with the proper meds to help prevent cocci. TIA!

Not the same. Selenium is a mineral that all animals need but only in very small amounts. Livestock on pasture on land that is not selenium deficient need no supplemental Selenium. Animals can be poisioned (Selenium toxicity) by too much selenium.
Ampro is a drug. Manufactured.
Seleniuim feeds have VERY small quantities and are formulated to prevent poisioning. Dont worry about it unless you are mixing your own feeds. You are not feeding a medicated feed though.

That's what I suspected, even though the sales clerk assured me it is medicated. Unhuh.

I will be returning the feed and getting the right stuff tomorrow from our city feed store. Thank you for confirming!
