Is Stall Dri Safe For Chicks

I have a batch of 16 day old Ameraucana chicks in the guest bathroom and they are some seriously stinky chicks! I find myself having to clean out and replace all the pine shavings daily. I never had this problem with my Favs last year, and I don't know what I am doing wrong.

The Amers are even eating the same brand of Chick Starter (Purina) that my Favs ate. Nothing should be different.

Can I use Stall Dri or Sweet PDZ layered into the pine shavings to help keep down the odor? Would it be safe in case they eat some?

My husband researched pdz for use in pigeon loft and it has no problems and he is picky very picky!

I've used for years in the barn around the chickens no troubles.

You might try switching to pine pellets instead of pine shavings too. Much less dust and I think it would help with the stink too--I use it for the cats litter box so it ought to handle some litttle chickies.

Thanks! I am willing to try anything...the smell meets me at the front door everyday but with the frigid temps I won't move them out to the garage. I am off to get some pine pellets and sprinkle in some PDZ.

I use PDZ in my meat chicken pens. It helps alot and they are some SERIOUSLY stinky birds. I've used Stall Dri for many years without any problems. Just be aware that it is very dusty until it settles.

Dust is fine with me as long as it helps.

Our TSC was out of pine pellets, so I just cleaned out the brooder box, sprinkled a layer of Sweet PDZ on bottom, filled with more shavings, sprinkled more PDZ on top of the shavings and blended it in. I should know by morning if its going to help and I will DEFINITELY know by tomorrow afternoon (the smell usually takes 24 hours to get to full strength). I will post results.

I mixed up some Play-box sand with some stal-dry and put in a shallow box and my two and three week old chicks seem to love it. They do eat some of it, but it hasn't seemed to bother them in any way.

DE ............. mix it w/bedding .stops odor. Mix it w/ feed ....... elimintes pathogens. GREAT stuff
