Thank you for your post. I have Runners which are poor to fair at mothering and have been looking for a good surrogate mother. I have been contemplating getting a female Muscovy but I don't want a larger duck making larger ducklings, esp drakeletts. (sp?) This Runner/Muscovy cross you had sounds perfect: good mother and no offspring of her own. I would have to learn how to clip wings - a small obstacle I can overcome. Sorry you had to give yours up but good luck on finding some you can raise yourself . . . and if you hear of any in Oregon, send them my way. I'll be looking around. Some things have changed since last year. They became fantastic foragers. Pretty amazing flyers too. I've never seen such a survival savvy group of animals.
One of the males was hit by a car last week. His sister and remaining brother were so lost without him. They began visiting the neighbors, and the neighbors didn't like it one bit...because of their desire to roam, we had to rehome them tonight. They get a huge pond and a large flock to hang out with. I've been sobbing all day, but it seems like it'll be really good for them.
I've also done a lot of research since I last posted...This is what I can conclude about them, along with some of my own observations:
They are hinnies.
Father: Fawn and white Runner [Either crested or carrying crested gene]
Mother: Blue fawn Muscovy
The males have normal sex drives. The female has no desire to mate, but shows strong interest in brooding.
Sounds include hissing and 'snickering' from the boys. Female coos like a dove. Female also appears to have a 'double voice' not present in muscovy females.
Males are huge. Female, about half the size, similar to muscovy.
Wings are massive, and flight is easier then it is for either muscovies -or- puddle ducks.
Very slim runner-like body with muscovy-like muscle. Very strong.
Fantastic foragers and ridiculous escape artists.
Extremely smart, I was able to teach some commands and tricks with no effort.
*Strong desire to be higher up in the hierarchy.
*Aggression issues.
*=Could have been caused by external factors before I got them.
Though I learned I couldn't breed Brulee and co., these birds are/were really, truly amazing...I can't rave enough about them. In the future I'm going to try obtaining more, if not breeding my own. With the brains they have, I can only imagine them being an amazing pet duck if actually raised by a human.
