I was thinking of getting a pair of peacocks (male and female) and was wondering if they are loud? We have neighbors close by on each side of our house and some behind. So, I dont want to get any if they are loud. Never had any before, so was wondering if they had a quieter breed?

Ckus, they are commonly called Green Java or Java Green. The owner said they are called Green Muticus Muticus Javanese. Scientific name Pavo Muticus. Mine are very quite. I live in the country where it is very peaceful. I don' t know if that affects them at all but I look forward to hearing them and that usually happens when the tractor is running or the chainsaw is running. Lol but true

We lived in fl for three years and the peas were wild there. We had a peacock a d peahen that roamed the neighborhood and occasionally a guest or three.... the pair stayed from our yard to three houses either way mostly. ALL of them were loud obnoxious creatures. And they tear up stuff. You couldnt pay us enough money to have those birds intentionally. Sorry.

Pavo Muticus (green peacock ) or spaldings ( hybrid between green peacock an indian Blue ) are a lot less noisy .... but need heating in winter! When the males wear feathers in scales ... they are less noisy!

I have about 50+ peafowl breeding season here in Northern California starts in February. The peacocks start making noise 24 hours a day until about August. At times it is almost unbearable and without a lot of white noise in the house we could not sleep. The cocks take up territories throughout the yard and they eat very little during this time. We bought 5 peafowl 20 years ago because we thought they were pretty......little did we know they reproduce like rabbits and since they free range and live in the tall eucalyptus
trees there is no catching them.Think long and hard if you buy any to free range on your property!

When our peafowl are not in "mating season" they still scream when cars they are not familiar with come into our driveway, when trash collectors come to pickup garbage on Friday mornings, unknown dogs come on our property and any loud unfamiliar noise will cause them to scream, call and or alert us. But, during mating season the screaming is much more constant. You got to really love peafowl to put up with it...and we do.
If peafowl were easy to keep everyone would have them.
