I am starting to think One of my 2 younger Araucanas is a male.. I bought them all as day old pullet chicks. I hope that it is not a male and it is just hyper and crazy. It seems to try and Start scuffles with the other hens even the older ones then just seems to end up getting picked on and running away.. My chickens range from between 13 and 17 weeks of age. I have two Araucanas that are 13 weeks old and two that are 17 weeks old. The one i suspect of being male is not Solid white like the other. It is mostly white but has a few dark feathers here and there on his back. and he stood alone today and did an odd Squawking sound as if he were trying to crow. never heard that sound out of any of my other chickens. He will run up to the other chickens that are 13 weeks old, (barred rocks, the other araucana, and a black astralorp) he will then stand up really tall fluff out his neck feathers and try to jump up and peck them on the head. they usually get the best of him and an older hen will chase him around the run or yard pecking the crap out of him until he squawks a little and gets away..We named him Einstein cause he is a funny looking chicken his feathers all jacked up reminds me of Einstein's hair due...I will try and post some good Photo's on here tonight when i get home from work. Of his feathers ill even put a video on here of him possibly someone with more Experience can help me decide what he is.......Most of the other younger chickens in the flock seem to avoid the older chicks a little and get along fine with each other but this one he insists on stirring up trouble then getting put in his place all day long.. I will ADD really good video and pictures on here within 24 hours . I plan to go to the coop before work and collect eggs so I will put the video on here as soon as i get home from work tonight. thank you.,,,,,, Jeremy

Is that a Ameraucana?

I really have no clue other than the blog entry I just saw talking about the differences between easter eggers, ameraucanas, and araucanas. Hopefully someone can give you some actually helpful advice

Unless you are in Australia, that is an Ameraucana, not an Araucana. In fact, it might be an Easter Egger if those are green legs I'm seeing.

As for male/female, it's hard to tell from the video. Instinctually, I would say male as that comb seems too huge and red for a 13 week female. The way to tell for sure is to examine hackle (neck) and saddle (back near the tail) feathers. If they are pointed at the ends, it is a male. If they are rounded, it is a female.

when I bought them as day old chicks at Rural King they were labled Araucanas. So i cant really be sure if they are truly that . I also got what was labled to be a new hampshire red and turns out it is an easter egger.. and one that was labled a golden laced wyandotte turns out to be a bantam..
.In comparrison to the other 13 week old its comb is much larger and more red. the other one barely shows one yet at all.. however as far as I can tell they both have the same shape of feathers and body. Yes they do have green legs and feet. does this make them Americana rather than Araucana? I will get a better video today the one i was able to get yesterday was not so good.. I will have my son catch it and hold it so i can get close up of the feathers here in a couple hours..If it is a Male I will not be wanting to keep it. When I do get a ROO I want it to be a Barred Rock.

I have never seen true Araucanas at feed/supply stores or hatcheries. True Araucanas are rumpless. True Ameraucanas have slate (dark grey or blueish) legs, as well as some other features. Green legs makes them Easter Eggers, but very pretty ones.

Here is a better Video .. Easter Eggers, Americana, and or Araucana are all fine with me as Long as they are Female.. I do not want a Roo unless it is a barred rock.. so here is a good video possibly it will have what is needed to decide the sex of this Crazy Mystery bird I call Einstein....
