Is there a way to encourage a hen to become broody?

Five gallon buckets as nesting boxes.

Your best shot is with the Americaunas. The BSLs could work depending on their parent's breeds but not as well as an Americana. I find that my easter eggers always do the trick. Rhode ISland Reds, if they go broody, are usually very mean and hardly ever last the full 21 days. Their broody gene was bred out. You can put the hen in a carrier box on some fake eggs in a dark area. If a hen goes broody with the rest of your hens it must be natural, however, you have a good shot if you giver her some bedding in a dark, well-ventilated box over some fake eggs. Always make sure she's actually broody before you put eggs underneath her.
