Is there anyone out there that is lucky and gets no Mites?

Some of this is geographical! We used to live in Indiana (I grew up in Colorado) and I had a quick and thorough education in noxious parasitic insects and toxic plants! (Poison ivy, oak, ) not to mention chiggers... OMG, I never knew such evil things existed until I left Colorado. We don't have fleas here in Colorado (for the most part) - THAT was an eye-opener! In Indiana, I had to treat my chickens for red mites very frequently - no problems with that here at all. On the other hand, we have bubonic plague in the prairie dog population, and it is considered endemic in rodents here. BUBONIC PLAGUE! Didn't have that in Indiana.

Almost 3 years later and no mites here in the southern NY area. I use diatomatous earth every now on my ground....and then when I totally clean my coops I whitewash them inside with it....and my birds do get to dust bath naturally every day in the sun..........so far so good.

Wow! That's a little freeky... This is a great thread though... I'm so paranoid about parasites. So I'm glad to learn all these great ideas. I just got some DE off ebay an I can't wait to use it. I'm going to make a dust box for them with de an some wood ash and dirt and maybe even some sevin.

Well, I say method, but it is actually her way of doing things. Bobbi is a top breeders of silkies and Amercauna chickens. She puts down a layer of sand and then tops it with pine shavings. I am not sure of dusting the birds or not. I have to talk to her more about that.
