Is there garden mulch that is safe for chickens?

I would like to put mulch down in my garden this year, and fencing/blocking it off is not an option. We love coco mulch and would love to use it again but I know we can't since chocolate is toxic to chickens. Is there a certain mulch that is safe for them to be around? If so what kind?

I use cypress. I don't know what's available in your area. Do you think the chickens will let your mulch stay in place? Mine won't; there's good bugs under there.

Most undyed mulches are fine (they don't eat it), -- pine straw is popular in my area and I use that as a major component of my coop and run litter because it's free for the raking out of my yard.

But if you don't fence your chickens into their own area or fence them out of your garden/landscape area they are going to dig up the mulch, scatter it everywhere, and eat or otherwise destroy just about anything you might be planting.
