Is there sales tax on chicken feed in California?

There is no tax on chicken feed in California. BTW, if you buy feed for a horse it is taxed. If you buy it for a cow it is not.

I do believe, and I could be wrong, but- feed for any animal considered livestock for human consumption is tax free, ie: goat feed, chicken feed, etc. When buying hay for my horses, I just say its for goats and I get tax free hay (I have goats also though) So in theory, chicken feed should be tax free since you can eat them and their eggs, but horses do not produce anything edible and are not edible themselves here in Ca, or the US (I hope) I have never been taxed for chicken scratch, lay pellets/crumble, chick starter or flock raiser.

Have you been taxed on your feed?

Please keep this on down-low. If our legislators realize this, they'll have a tax on it in no time and probably make it retroactive and payable by Christmas time.

I actually looked it up in the California Department of Taxes and Fees Administration and found out chickens are classified as food animals, i.e. food for human consumption. As such, they are not subject to tax and neither is the feed for them.
I took my info down to my Walmart. They said they were not aware that it was taxed and gave me a refund of the taxes I paid for the last two orders. An employee also orders it and said she didn't realize she was being taxed, either.
They are going to run it up the food chain and get it taken care of (it was beyond their pay grade to make the change).
Other chicken supplies such as grain, grit, oyster shell, etc. IS subject to tax. Just not the feed.
