I actually looked it up in the California Department of Taxes and Fees Administration and found out chickens are classified as food animals, i.e. food for human consumption. As such, they are not subject to tax and neither is the feed for them. Please keep this on down-low. If our legislators realize this, they'll have a tax on it in no time and probably make it retroactive and payable by Christmas time.
Good for you! You rock!I actually looked it up in the California Department of Taxes and Fees Administration and found out chickens are classified as food animals, i.e. food for human consumption. As such, they are not subject to tax and neither is the feed for them.
I took my info down to my Walmart. They said they were not aware that it was taxed and gave me a refund of the taxes I paid for the last two orders. An employee also orders it and said she didn't realize she was being taxed, either.
They are going to run it up the food chain and get it taken care of (it was beyond their pay grade to make the change).
Other chicken supplies such as grain, grit, oyster shell, etc. IS subject to tax. Just not the feed.
