Is there such a thing as a docile Roo?

I have a Black Jersey Giant, Jasper, who is a real sweetheart. He even lets me carry him around, and will eat treats from my hand. He's a "gentle giant"!

Temperment with roosters seems to be part nature, part nurture. Sure, there are tendencies among breeds for behaviors, but you'll find as many different opinions & personal stories as there are members on BYC. For every breed that is "supposed" to be ___ you'll find someone with a testimony about their roo that was the opposite. I've had giant roosters that were gentle and tiny bantams that were terrorists.

This I can say for certain: There really ARE docile roosters. And there are many many many more roosters in the world than there are "job openings" for them away from the table. Therefore, there is NO reason to have to put up with any aggressive behavior from any rooster. Just send them Across The Road and audition your next roo.

With your mix of breeds you could try any type of rooster, even a mixed-breed. They are often more colorful and interesting anyway. Check your local Craigslist, feed store bulletin boards, even other local BYC members. You should be able to find a nice roo for free or little cost.

Check around with word of mouth and ask at your feed store. Many people have a gentile roo that they simply have to get rid of and you can watch him up close before you take him home. I have had many breeds of gentle roos so it's hard for me to pick a particular one.

SILKIE and COCHIN roos make awesome pets and are very docile and soft and fluffy. I have one of each and they are so tame, they are house pets.

I have also raised other breeds of roos and if you get them when they are baby chicks and pick them up everyday, they have always came out tame and friendly.

I have 4 extra little blue roosters who will need homes next month. They're bantams, but try galliantly to mate with the EE hen who's almost full sized. They're all lap chickens, very friendly and docile:

We have been very, very lucky with our roosters, all very easy to get along with and very nice pets. Maybe the Silkie dad, Rosecomb mom have something to do with it? I've heard people say that mixed breeds make good companions (dogs, cats, etc) and tend to be smart. Though, their dad the Silkie is an awesome, lovey rooster.

For me, I will get 10 roos as chicks and cull out any roo that runs pullets away from feeder. Also any nasty roo (by this I mean the ones always start fights, not the ones that finish them. As they get older you will find one who will call the others to food ( Keeper) and will alarm if there is danger. The breeds you mentioned, thumbs up on Delawrae, EE. Personaly not high on Wellie roos. I have never had a Roo that was a RRI or RRI mix( The stars) that was not nasty. There is alot to handling and talking to them everyday, even if only 2 minutes. As they get older, they may not want to be picked up, but they usually will let you get very close. Sometimes they do not like you standing over them, you can get done on their level and they will come up to you. Some chicken hoarders like my self will butcher or sell to someone I know is going to butcher the culled roos. If you wish not to butcher, it becomes hard to get a good roo, because you may only get one roo to raise,so you do not have to cull. You roll the dice. For me, I will cull 9 to get one good roo and more for a great roo.
My Roo is Pumpkin Hesley, still young and will die for his hens. I have hawks come by everyday and will not loose any hens. He protects them and tells them what to do and when to do it. I have had chickens all my life(38 years old) and he the Best roo I have ever had and he is only 10 months old.

I have a submissive, docile roo. He is a Blue Laced Red Wyandotte. my Dad calls him ""chubbo"(even though his name is Sour), due to how chubby he has gotten from becoming friendly for extra corn. LOL
One breed I will suggest NOT getting for supposedly docile nature, is the Black Giant. I was led to believe that they were very calm friendly birds.... Oh,..... NO! Cogburn was nice to me(most days), but he was VERY protective of his shared(w/Sour) harem. My poor dad got claws to the groin every time I wasn't home and he had to go out to feed our flock...

I have a BR roo that, while he is not a 'pet,' he lets me handle him & has never flown at me or tried to attack me or anyone that's been around him. I'm sure that if I was of a mind to make Theodore a pet, he would be very sweet.
