Hello,

I've just picked up this little fellow, but the owner was unsure as to what sort of Duck it is.

After searching on line quite a bit I think he is a Black Swedish. Can anyone take a guess as to whether its a male or female and what breed it is?

Cant tell if its male or female but I'm pretty sure you have a black swedish there. Listen once he/she has his/her adult quack, if its a loud honk its female, if its a raspy murmur its a male. Good luck and do you have a name yet?

. It looks like a Black Swedish to me as well. It looks fairly young so I'd hold off a bit for sexing.

I was holding off on naming it until I found out the sex. I like "Loraine" for a female.

My friends all call him Duck Norris.

He is a house duck, I'm not sure if that is frowned upon on these forums- I hope not! He follows me every where and has a very humorous demenour. Likes to come fishing with us in the canoe. I think it's about 2.5 weeks old.

Is the coloring pretty straight forward as they grow? Just black where he's dark brown and white where he's white/yellowish?

Duck Norris - BA HAHA!

It doesn't look like a Black Swedish to me, but I'm not that experienced. I have just one, but I saw tons of pics of them as I was researching them. It's cute, whatever it is!

rhetor22- welcome to BYC- you do have a very cute looking duckie there, but I do agree with the last two posters at this stage that you have a cross bred duckling. Knowing where it actually came from can sometimes give a clearer indication but since the owner didnt even know it becomes a bit hard. Does the owner actually have any swedes? Do you know what other breeds they did have. What I have based my opinion on is the amount of white on this little one. In swedish- it is generally more of a bib on the chest that is white- and although it can differ greatly in size- yours looks more like the colour pattern is influenced by the runner pied pattern as it extends right up into the face to the eyes- as well as well down into the body. This kind of colour pattern is quiet common in cross bred ducks. Yours may well be a swede but it not a show quality one with that amount of white on it.

Have a look here at these swedes.

If the owner don't know then it's not a true Swedish. Sorry to burst your bubble but it's just a mix. Sometimes if I hacth just some mixed Peking and Rouen eggs it turn out like him. I have one at the moment named Tut because he had eyeliner like King Tut :) they're super sweet though, yay!
