Is this a good brooder plate?

I would guess that the brooder plate is an item where going for the top-shelf brand counts. I do see a lot of unbranded ones on web-stores.

As I understand it, backyard chickens are associated with fires from heat-lamps, at least to firefighters, and the brooder plate seems much safer.
