I found an add on craigslist for black copper marans. This man said this

Hey there. My Maran chicks are about 5 days old. I purchased the eggs from Thom Dean and hatched the eggs myself. I bought 14 eggs and had 13 hatch. I am only selling them because I have the chance to buy an adult flock locally here that I have had my eye on and now I have too many birds. If you go on ebay and search black copper marans.. you will see eggs for sale with the eggs written out in the letters BC. Those are the sellers I bought them from (Thom Dean) and you will see pictures of the eggs and birds. His lines are 100% Wade Jeane lines which are great birds. Thanks and let me know if there is anything else.

Brian

He said he would sell them all to me for $150.00 I was never really interested in marans but I have noticed they seem pretty popular.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

I am not sure who brought this thread back up. I posted it a long time ago. The chicks are long gone. I appreciate all the responses I got. Look at the original date when I posted this thread and you will see why it is over.
Thanks.

That's $11+ dollars a chick.

Hatching eggs on the expensive end for marans are $5 an egg.

I'd say it's NOT a good deal.

I agree with Mahonri, too expensive.

O.k. Thanks for letting me know! I have no experience with marans and did not know if that was a fair price or not.
Thank you so much!

Haven't I seen BCM chicks for sale here for $10 each?

I'm no expert though so maybe someone with the breed here could comment.

Sounds to me like he wants you to pay for his adult flock. Or atleast cover A LOT of the cost. $11 is HIGH IMO. I dont know much about the breed in question but that is the price of adult birds around here.
Id send him back an offer on $6-8 a chick. Not $11

Sounds like the seller needs the $150 to buy the other flock

But, I googled Thom Dean.....who seems to be a known maran breeder.

Give him a call or email and ask HIM!!!!

My feeling is " a bird in the hand is better than an egg in the incubator".

Lots can happen between purchasing, shipping and incubating eggs. I've seen BCM eggs sell for over $50 per dozen NOT INCLUDING SHIPPING. When you add $12 for shipping and only get a 50% hatch, that comes out to almost $11 per chick. And that's assuming a 50% hatch...sometimes you only get 1 or 2 chicks out of a dozen eggs...depending on shipping and incubation issues.

I don't think it's too much, but I would still ask if that's his best price.

If he was a breeder with a good rep,or someone you have delt with before and you knew you could trust him, I would go for it . But, does he even know what he has? Have him send you pics of each bird and ask about the egg color. Even if they are good birds and the egg color is a little light, then it takes time and breeding to get the color back. I would offer him less for the birds if you are unsure, or take the time to find a reputable breeder who has what you want. Spend your money on what you want not on what someone else tells you what you want.
