I came out today around noon to collect eggs and feed my girls only to find feathers spread all over the pen and one of my ladies laying dead near the coop. Whatever did it took her head and ate through her chest cavity. All the other hens seem fine. From reading on the forums, my first though is that it is a hawk attack. Any other ideas?

Did she have any marks on her back? Like from talons

My silkie that recently was killed by a hawk that got into the coop (as well as her three babies) had similar injuries. Her head was there, but all the skin was gone, and it was eaten down the neck and into the breast area. One of the babies was also missing its head.

Every time I've ever watched a hawk feed, they plucked the breast and started eating there.

I think something besides a raptor got your bird

A hawk just got one of mine today, looked just like that. If it happen during the day I would say hawk, dusk or dawn owl.

It's definitely a bird of prey. I think hawk.
