Ironsun, i disagree that looks like a hen to me the dots. I've had SEVERAL rusty chested hens in both browns and goldens
ETA: i'm not saying it IS a hen but it does look like a hen ot me and i'd personally say that's a poor example of a roo in that the unquestionable roos have no dots. ANy rusty chested dotted bird i've had has been a hen
I'll try to find pictures....
I've learned if you're not sure wait unless you can't wait
However upon looking at it closer i see the blush starting under it's throat so i'd say roo but off the chest that's iffy....check out my examples below
Prime example...rusty breast with mimimal spotting and its a hen!
to me this is a prime example of a young roo:
and a young hen:
and the same in golden:
my other brown hen i had on left NO spots...roo on right:
Oh heavens. Here I thought I had 12 roos and only 3 hens, but I pulled all the rust colored ones today to seperate them (they're about 5 weeks old) and some did have a few or some spots!! So ANY spots make it a female? At least most likely??
If they have rust coloring and spots, I would wait until they are sexually mature to know for sure. Once they start crowing you can vent sex them. I have hens that have rust colored breasts with many spots, and some that have blonde colored breasts with spots. Idk if I've had any that didn't have spots, all the un-spotted ones go to the sale
I have a brown male and a brown ? - the reason I say ? is because it doesn't have spots, but it also doesn't have the "brick red" (or rust) around its face and throat like the one that's a definite male. The one I'm unsure of HAS attempted to crow, but does a pitiful imitation (it comes out more as a part crow/part squeak). Do female Coturnix ever crow? If so, how do I know for sure what this one is BEFORE DH decides to process my extra males this weekend?
ETA: Not trying to hijack the thread - just figured my question was in line with the subject matter

Vent sex it. If it is a male, it will have a swollen gland right behind the vent. When you press on this gland, a white foam will come out. If it has the swollen gland and the white foam, congratulations!! It's a boy!
