Is This a Pip?

Pics
Don't cook them.
Yep, I'm starting with the red light only because it's the least amount of heat, so that shouldn't be an issue unless it's too cold for them. I'm a little concerned that the egg hasn't made that much progress since I first saw the pip. Is it going to be an issue?

Don't let them get crushed to death in a mosh pit of cold quail either.... :D

But with 4 chicks you shouldn't have that problem.

Whether you end up at 90, 100, or somewhere in between make sure to check the temp at the opposite end of the brooder to verify your cool zone is significantly cooler than the hot zone....

I tested the red light again and it seems to be 85 under the light (it was 90 before, I don't think I waited as long this time) and 78 at the cooler end. I'm just worried the light isn't hot enough, so I'll keep trying out new things.

That's not a very big temp difference between the hot end and cool end. Make sure the heat lamp is all the way against the end wall. I think Kiki will agree that 85F is definitely not hot enough.

Remember any drafts or changes in room temp can affect the temp too...

Ok, I think the white light is my best bet then. It was like 95 degrees, and that seems to be in the middle. I'll make sure to put it at the very end, I think there was still room when I measured the temps. I'm getting a little nervous about the egg though, it doesn't seem to look that much different.
I think it’ll be fine, you’ll be able to tell if it’s too hot or cold once you get them in there and you can adjust from there. Have the eggs made any progress?
Not really, it's been very gradual. I think it still has at least another day. Another issue is the space between the shelf and the incubator door. I'm worried that a baby can get stuck between it. Should I take a picture to show you guys?

Yes, please. If a chick can get stuck, it will.

Here's a pic of the egg right now (the triangle looks like a little hole, but I don't see that much cracking besides that) and the gap. I tried getting a side pic so sorry if it's hard to see.

Can you put a cookie sheet or something under the paper towels on the shelf but sticking out to cover that gap?

It can take up to 24 hours before the pip becomes a zip. I wouldn't worry about it yet. It hasn't begun trying to get out yet.
