She was fine yesterday but this morning after letting the girls out of the coop I noticed one of my hens leaning sort of backwards and not moving much. Then I see this. She sqauts and pushes every few minutes or so . Is this a prolapse? What can I do to help her? Edit To Say: No bird vets near me, is this something I can treat myself? Thanks

That's definitely a prolapse. That happened to one of my turkeys.....this usually happens when they have an egg stuck up there and they're trying to push it out. You'll start to see stuff shoot out; yuk....! If you happen to have a farm vet nearby (one that can treat horses, cows, etc) they can usually come by to treat it. Our farm vet did the same thing. I watched our vet do the following:
Have someone help you hold your chicken while you do the following: Clean it off real good with a mild cleansing solution, clean off any gunk that is hanging on the prolapse, put on some latex gloves, and apply some petroleum jelly to your glove. Gently try to push it back it gradually, but not all the way at once. Do a little bit at a time. Your chicken may be trying to push out the egg shells and remaining yolk white. But to be on the safe side, call your local vet; usually they can give you some tips on treatment. :)

Thank you. I started a bath for her right now. I've never had a hen prolapse before so I wasn't sure. After cleaning her up a bit there is yolk and white but I don't see shell. Does anyone have any advice on how to get the contents of the egg out? Should I gently push that back in first? I'm assuming that's what the larger round is as there's egg white leaking.View attachment 1333284

I wouldn't worry about the contents of the egg shell; it's probably all still up in there. The shell will come out on its own. She is trying to push out the egg white. For now, Gently push the prolapse back in and just clean the outsides.

Here's a good website; I referred to this one, but I didn't use hydrocortisone creame. I just kept it clean with a wound cleaning solution. And if it came back out again, I would clean up the gunk and gently push it back in. Monitor the area and make sure that she is pooping. You may need to separate her from the flock and place her in a pet carrier for now, until she is well.

I would lubricate her vent, and with a gloved finger, insert it into the vent opening if possible, and feel for any membrane or shell. Them you can apply honey, sugar, or preparation H cream to try and reduce the swelling. Keep the red tissue moist with cream honey or oil, so that it does not dry out, since drying out will let the tissue die. Push the red tissue back inside, and repaeat as needed. Try to get her to stop laying by keeping her in a dark crate for 16 hours daily overnight. Let her have daylight for 8 hours a day so she can eat and drink and walk around. Here is a link to read:
