Is this a quail??

Chukars are nothing like bobwhites, I had no problems with the ones I had. They can be aggressive, or so I've been told, but I've not experienced that.

It does look like a zebra finch!

I had Chukars for about two days. Apparently there was a virus going through the breeders flock that wiped all of hers out as well. Glad she told me that after I'd brought them home. I got a full refund though.

i've always loved the little Chukars, though. They are much cuter than pheasants.

They are beautiful! If I ever saw them before, I don't think I knew what they were.

Nope. Not getting any.

Folks say they are mean to each other and I don't want that!

I want to get some more, I lost the ones that I had. But I need to make a pen for stuff like that first....I wonder if I could keep some with my peacocks?

Chukar, As All Partridge Speces, Are Colder Climate Birds. Many Folks Have No Trouble Out Of Them. I Have Found That Hot Climates Make Them Mean, As In Way Meaners Than Any Bob White. Here In Our Subtropical Climate Of Central Florida They Are 2 Legged Assassins. I Know Folks In Southern Cali That Have As Nuch Trouble Too. As With Most Gamebirds Space Or Solitude Is Key. Either They Need Massive Amounts Of Space Or No Roommates.

I'm sorry to mercilessly abuse your thread, but people around here seem hungry for information on these birds and they weren't getting answers in the Pheasant thread. Quess the right people didn't hang out there much, the one's that have raised them before.
Please don't change anything in the title of the thread, moderator's would have to move it then.

I'm with you on this shelleyd, I think they are really pretty. I read up on them and the Bobwhites before I decided on Coturnix. I was under the impression that you had to have big pens with hugh flight pens and I don't have that much room.

I know JJMR said that here, well rather there with the heat and humidity, there are problems with aggressiveness. Its even more humid here than Florida, but I may still want to try. If I can learn what I need to do and its not much different than the Coturnix. You know it seems like they could be raised pretty much the same from the few glimpses of information I gathered from the Pheasant thread. If that's the case, they are raised about alike and they should be here, partridges that is. There seems to be a lot of Coturnix people that are interested in the Bobwhites and the GZF quail. (I'm sorry I don't want to say their real name to much or the thread will get moved and buried).

So do the eggs incubate the same as Coturnix?
What kind of pen just to growout GZF quail?
Could I keep them in the same area as the Coturnix or should they be on the otherside of the yard?
I have to assume they eat the same foods?
How long do they need to grow out until of size, or mature?
What else, I don't even know enough to ask the right questions?

I don't want to raise them or breed them in any way, just hatch some eggs and grow them out. If we like them, then from time to time I'll just buy eggs. I do know I have to get a permit in Texas, no big deal. I am curious at this time.

"I know JJMR said that here, well rather there with the heat and humidity, there are problems with aggressiveness. Its even more humid here than Florida, " ==== DONT YOU BELEIVE IT! STRANGE THING ABOUT HUMIDITY, 100% IS AS HIGH AS IT GOES... GRANTED RIGHT NOW WERE IN THE WORST DRAUGHT ON RECORD SO ITS ONLY ABOUT 84%, BUT THATS RARE. AND SO CALI SHOULD HAVE NO HUMIDITY AT ALL AND THEY HAVE AS MUCH DIFFICULTY AS I DO.

So do the eggs incubate the same as Coturnix? AS FAR AS CONDITIONS/ HUMIDITY/ TEMP GOES? YES... INCUBATION TIME IS LONGER 23-25 DAYS
What kind of pen just to growout GZF quail? THEY CAN BE STARTED ON WIRE IN BROODER PENS BUT LIKE BOBS AGRESSION COMES WICKED FAST WITH NO WARNING ON THESE GUYS, AND WHEN THEY GET AGRESSIVE THEY KILL- NOT LIKE COTURNIX THAT JUST WHIP THE SNOT OUT OF POOR DUMB MORTY OVER THERE EVERYDAY FOR 6 MOS, OH NO- THEY KILL WITH FRIGHTENING SPEED WHEN THEY ARE AGRESSIVE, OFTEN TIMES YOU WONT KNOW YOU ARE HAVING AGRESSION PROBLEMS WITH THESE GUYS TIL THE BODY COUNT STARTS RISING AT AN ALARMING RATE FOR UNKNOWN REASON
Could I keep them in the same area as the Coturnix or should they be on the otherside of the yard? THEY ARE NOT GOOD BED-FELLOW FOR QUAIL, BUT BEING GAMEBIRDS THEY CAN BE KEPT IN CLOSE PROXIMETY WITHOUT DISEASE ISSUES
I have to assume they eat the same foods? YESSIM GAME BIRD FEED, THO I RECOMMEND CONDIONER RATHER THAN STARTER AFTER 8 WKS OF AGE, HELPS CURB THE MEANESS A BIT
How long do they need to grow out until of size, or mature? ROUGHLY 24-30 WKS TO FULL SIZE

ALSO AS WITH BOBS THEY ARE A SEASONAL LAYER, WONT LAY TIL THEIR 1ST SPRING

Thanks for the info, I guess its the heat and the lengh of time to grow out issues.
But I'll print it out incase I want a nervous breakdown in the future, I'll know what to get. Hoards of Chukar
